Our Chosen Genre

After researching a variety of my group’s favourite genres, as well as mainstream genres, we have decided to create a promotional music video for a Pop/Pop rock song. The number of pop artists, and music videos we explored, and enjoyed motivated this decision. Since my group and I are classified as part of a young target audience, It became evident that this would make it easier for us to understand the standards expected by a young target group. We also found that by working with such a large genre, it would enable us to try new techniques and ideas inspired by a range of artists. Moreover, since we enjoyed the pop genre, we decided that our experience would be fun, and hopefully encourage our ideas.

TIME LINE

To appreciate how the pop genre has evolved over the years, I have researched and created a time line of events, based on American and British pop artists that have had an impact on contemporary pop music.

• In August 1969, shortly before Michael turned 11, the Jackson 5 opened for Diana Ross at the L.A.

• In 1972, Michael Jackson releases his first hit solo 'BEN'.
  

• Madonna signed a single with a label belonging to Warner Bros. Her first release was 'Everybody' in 1982

• In 1983 Pop rock group 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' are formed.

• Boyzone, an Irish pop boy band were formed and had popular mainstream success, especially in the UK, in 1993.
  

• The Backstreet Boys formed in 1993, and were Grammy-nominated American pop boy band. They sold 100 million albums, making them best selling boy band.
  

• Spice Girls were the most successful British pop girl group formed in 1994.

• Pink began professionally singing since 1995, but was previously a songwriter. Her rebellious lyrics led to selling 31 million records.
• NSYNC was an American pop boy group, formed in 1997, 'N Sync has sold over 56 million records worldwide.

• Sugar babes are a British female pop trio, originally formed in 1998, but now consisting different members Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen.
  
• S club 7 was a British pop group, they came to public attention in 1999, when they starred in their own television series.

• Taylor Swift is a pop, country singer and guitarist, found in 2006. She was number one best selling artists in 2008.
  

• JLS are a British pop boy band, who were runners-up in the The X Factor in 2008. Their debut single "Beat Again" was released in the UK on 13 July 2009, and went to number-one in the UK Singles Chart.
