PINK, POP PRINCESS

Pink is a renowned American singer and songwriter, who has sold over 31 million albums worldwide. Her songs are characterized by their personally rebellious tone and a statement-like strict use of the first person. She released her first single "There You Go" and first album, which was very RnB orientated. However, she is began to be more recognised for her pop oriented albums, such as Missundaztood, this album marked the shift in the sound of her music. This reveals that the music genre pop, is very commercialised, since Pink adapted her music and sound to relate to a greater audience.

PINK- So What

Pink met professional motocross racer Carey Hart and proposed to Hart during one of his races. Pink's publicist, announced that the singer and Carey Hart had separated. This was reflected in the video for her 2008 hit "So What", deals with her separation and divorce. This illustrates the conventions of pop music, as the story line behind well known pop songs are based on relationships and love, which is aimed at an adolescent target group.

Director

Pink’s ‘So What’ video was directed by Dave Meyers, who is known for showing music artists giving a over-the-top portrayal of celebrities or themselves. Many of Meyers’ music videos have a humorous and bold characteristic approach, which reflected a lot of pink’s music. Pink previously worked with him for the videos "U + Ur Hand" and "Stupid Girls", which earned MTV Video Music Award for Best Pop Video. The video was released on Saturday, September 6 on iTunes, and quickly jumped to the #1 video spot on the iTunes chart in less than 24 hours of it being listed. It was also was ranked on VH1 as the 3rd best music video of 2008 on the Top 40 Videos of 2008, moreover, it soon became second favourite video of 2008 on social networking site, Facebook. The evidence of technical convergence reveals that the video was extremely popular with a majority of the young generation, since VH1, Facebook and iTunes have a large number of teenage consumers.

As Pink’s ‘So What’ video is one of my favourite videos, I want to incorporate Meyer’s style when producing our own Pop music video. I think that the use of exaggerated, humorous scenes would appeal to a young teenage audience. By utilising humour, I feel that the music video would interest both genders, and create cheerful connotations throughout the storyline.
