I have learned that although at present patriarchal views are reinforced subtly, the media for example, the music industry continue to commercialize these misogynistic ideas, through music videos and album covers. I believe that record companies take advantage of these ideas, in hope that the artist appears to be more prestigious, hence encouraging the audience to buy their album. However, I feel that their target constituency is narrow, since the images used (showing men over powering women) only appeal to males.
Dizzee Rascal one of many renowned British MC’s has been accused for wasting his talents with misogynist lyrics. Journalist ‘Chris Cottingham’ reveals that Dizzee Rascal’s current album has reference to sexual activity towards a number of different women. His lyrics read...
"I had this pretty little girl in Sweden / Yeah, she was kind of short, but she was easy...I like that kind of girl / You didn't even need to ask her name / Can you believe it? / She was sucking my dick/ All shapes, size and colours / Sisters and mothers / Just know that I bag it before I shag it.”
These degrading lyrics display Dizzee Rascal as a pimp, who lacks sympathy towards women. His defense follows the lines of "...lighten up, it's just a bit of fun.", exposing his misogynistic attitude towards women.
