Band Information

While making the video for our song 'Superman' I have been constantly thinking about the image of the artist/s. This begins with the idea of being a solo artist or being part of a conventional pop/rock band. Moreover, I have thought about the age and gender of the artist/s based on the target audience.

Solo Artists Or Band?

Ke
$ha-

Ke$ha is an contemporary American artist, who broke through during the early period of 2009. Her early singing career was influenced by her single parent mother, who was also and singer and songwriter. Nevertheless, Ke$ha began as a backing singer for renowned artists such as 'The Veronicas', Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. After years of experience, she emerged from the crowed of backing singers and appeared in 'Flo Riders' hit 'Right Round', and later that year he debut single 'TikTok was released and reached number one in five different countries.

OR

Paramore-
Paramore also originated from America, but have made success around the world, especially in the UK. The members consist of the lead singer, lead guitar and backing vocals, bass guitar, drums and rhythm guitar. In 2005, the group released their debut album known as 'All We Know is Falling' in 2005, however, their second album 'Riot' had a greater impact on their audience, shown by their Platinum record in the US and Gold record in the UK.

Although, I have focused a majority of my artist research on a solo artist (P!nk) I have come to the conclusion that the song 'Superman' will be by a 'band' rather than a solo artist. Firstly, I feel that bands have the ability to appeal to more than one target audience, as each member has their own style and interests, however, solo artists so not have this advantage and appear less versatile. Moreover, I think that it is most appropriate to create a 'band', as there are a number of instruments incorporated within the song, and having a band to play the music rather than creating the music on garage band will earn more respect and admiration from the audience.

Band Members
Though, I have decided to create a band rather than a solo artist, I am still confused as to 'What the age of the band members should be?' and the gender of the members. It is for this reason that I have created a simple questionnaire, and asked ten member of my target audience to answer.

  • After questioning five males and five females, about their favourite bands and their ideas about creating their own band, I found that a 6/10 candidates chose Paramore and Evanescence as one of their favourite bands. This reveals that a majority of the candidates are fond of lead female vocals, which is relevant to our band as the lead vocals are also female.
  • Secondly, I also concluded that the most popular suggestion for 'number of band members' were four.
  • Finally, all ten candidates recommended a mixture of both female and male members.
  • As a result, I have decided that the maximum number of members in the band is four. I feel that this is a great proposal as it allows the audience to easily remember the band, and their individual names, therefore creating a closer relationship between the members of the band and the audience. This is unlike Metal band 'Slipknot' where there is an obvious distance between the artists and their audience due to the large number of members.
  • Furthermore, the members will be of a mixed gender, however the lead vocals will remain as a female member as this is appropriate for our song 'Superman'. As Paramore has an impressive reputation, I have chosen for the other three members of the band to be male like Paramore. This will therefore attracting the 'Female Gaze', since our target audience will be predominantly female.
